Rob Oliver is a motivational speaker and author. His story begins with a spinal cord injury at the age of 21. Although the injury left him with no use of his legs and limited use of his hands and arms, he is determined to live life to the fullest. As a married father of 11-year-old triplets, he drives, works full-time and lives every day to the fullest!
Rob Oliver was body surfing in North Carolina with friends when he was pushed down by a wave and struck his head. “I felt a crunch and heard a pop and everything went cold.” This happened in 1993 and the bright 90’s style purple and bright yellow suit is what saved his life. As he was being air lifted to the hospital, he had his first realization of being on the fringe of life. His first conversation was with his girlfriend at the time. He explained that there was talk of future limitation in his life and he told her that she did not need to stay based on pity or outside pressure. She said, “I do not love you because of whether you can walk or not.” That girlfriend is now his wife; she gave him the foundation for living with a disability.
I don’t identify myself as a paraplegic…I’m Rob.
The term ‘handicap’ is a derivative of the term ‘cap in-hand’ from the earlier 1900’s. Back then, people with disabilities did not have any sort of rights advocacy and sat on the street with their…you guessed it…cap in hand. I didn’t know that! I actually learned a lot from this show and could have quoted Mr. Oliver about 20 more times but I would much rather you guys and gals listen to the Rob Oliver interview to hear more.
Rob is currently working for the Disability Rights Organization of Pennsylvania. He works to make sure the rights and well-being of people with disabilities are being upheld. In his spare time he speaks to anyone who wants to hear his message. The message is: don’t focus on what your problems or limitations in life are, but what you can do and what you are going to do in life. Rob’s autobiography is called “Still Walking”, where he elaborates on a lot of the awesome points he made during the show. I agree with Dawn, great guest!
